Home Improvement Tax Credits now available:

  • must be *placed in service from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2010.
    (*properly ready and available for use)
  • must be for taxpayer's principal residence
  • $1,500 is the maximum total amount that can be claimed for all products placed in service in 2009 & 2010 for most home improvements
  • must have a *Manufacturer Certification Statement to qualify
    (signed statement from the manufacturer certifying that the product or component qualifies for the tax credit)
  • for record keeping, save your receipts and the Manufacturer Certification Statement
  • improvements made in 2009 will be claimed on your 2009 taxes (filed by April 15, 2010) — use IRS Tax Form 5695 (2009 version) — it will be available late 2009 or early 2010
  • If you are building a new home, you cannot qualify for the tax credits for windows or doors More.

In combination with the exterior window (or wood door) over which it is installed:
  1. has a U-factor and SHGC of 0.30 or below
  2. Meets the IECC

Ask your retailer if specific windows and doors qualify for tax credits

*subject to $1,500 maximum per homeowner for all improvements combined
Obtain Your Tax Credit

Note the above specifications from EnergyStar.gov:

  • Up to $1,500 maximum credit for windows for all taxable years.
  • Credit allowed only for amounts paid or incurred to purchase the window or door.
  • Not allowed for amounts paid for onsite preparation, assembly, original installation labor, other components or sales tax.
  • The purchase must be made during the taxable year for which the credit is claimed.

Then 1) gather the proper documentation about your purchase from your contractor, including invoice with cost breakdown and NFRC label from your qualified window or door and 2) keep with your tax documents - you won't need to supply them to the IRS to get the credit, but you will need them if you are ever audited.
